The story
Keijiro Doi (土井敬次郎) is the middle of three generations, and the one most people have never heard of.
The Doi forge runs Kazuo, then Keijiro, then Itsuo. The first, Kazuo (土井一雄), born in 1897, is remembered in Sakai as a phantom master smith, a name that comes up in conversation far more often than it comes up on a blade. The third, Itsuo, still forges. Keijiro sits between them, and he worked at Aoki Hamono's Sanpo factory in Sakai, the same workshop his son stands in today.
Aoki Hamono's own craftsmen page calls him a father praised as a master craftsman, 名匠と謳われた父, and says Itsuo studied under him and took on the techniques the family keeps to itself, 秘伝の技. That is the whole of what the maker says about him in public, and it is written on his son's page rather than his own.
What he is remembered for, if you ask the people who sold his knives, is the Blue #2 yanagiba. Retailer listings credit him with forging the Sakai Takayuki Aogami #2 single-bevel series for years, and name Itsuo, who forges the Hien kensaki-yanagiba in the same steel, as his successor. We have not been able to confirm that with the maker, so take it as the trade's memory rather than a record.
Owners are more specific than catalogues ever are. On the forums his knives come back as stunning, very well made, a superbly made single bevel, and a mirror polish that is beautiful but delicate. That last word is doing real work. A polish that fine is a polish you can mark.
Two honours are attached to his name and neither is settled. A workshop report has him certified a traditional craftsman, 伝統工芸士, in 1987 under the old ministry-designated system, and receiving a decoration in the spring of 1997. When we put the decoration question to James he came back with research rather than recollection, and flagged it himself as something to check with the maker directly. So it stays an open question instead of a line on a page.
He died on the afternoon of 12 November 2017. Suisin, the Osaka knife house, put out the notice and gave his age as ninety.
